Position Summary:

The Clinical Nurse Educator supports our clinicians through education, clinical mentoring, coaching, and quality-driven activities. In conjunction with the Hospice leadership team, the Educator helps to design, implement, and provide training to Hospice team members. This Educator assists with infection control initiatives in accordance with the agency’s policies and regulatory standards. They serve as a role model in advancing clinical practice to achieve better patient outcomes and are responsible for the orientation and precepting of new field clinicians.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current State of Maryland Nursing License. CHPN required within one year of position acceptance.
  • Five or more years of experience in healthcare.
  • Advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in hospice and palliative care required.
  • Healthcare education experience in a hospital, hospice, or home health setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state, federal and regulatory standards, including standards set forth by accrediting body, as applied to hospice organizations.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and ability to exercise good judgment in a stressful environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications.
  • Computer proficiency required.

Duties and Responsibilities (* indicates function on which employee will be evaluated):

  • Receive and process incoming hospice referrals from hospitals, physicians, facilities and families.

  • Precepting & Clinical Orientation Develops the nurse preceptor program and orients preceptors.
  • Creates and coordinates the training plan and precepting schedule for all new nurses.
  • Regularly follows up with nurse preceptors for updates on new nurses in orientation.
  • Provides objective feedback on the progress of new nurses in orientation to Clinical Team Managers, Clinical Directors, Supervisor, and Human Resources as needed.
  • Observes visits to provide feedback on strengths and areas for improvement for new and current nurses.*
  • *Assists nurses with time management and scheduling skills.*
  • Teaches proper documentation techniques and timeframes in accordance with regulations.
  • Performs regular chart audits to review documentation skills progress for new nurses during their 90-day orientation.*
  • Reviews required competency checklists and all paperwork related to clinical onboarding; submits clinical onboarding documents to HR by the end of the orientation period.
  • Ensures all relevant skills and competencies are introduced during orientation and validated during nurses’ precepting experiences.
  • Technology, EMR & Clinical Support Provides support in technology areas for clinical staff (Microsoft 365, Outlook, 8×8, Phone, Paychex, and EMR).
  • Works collaboratively with the informatics nurse and other departments in the design, evaluation, revision, and provision of instruction in the use of the EMR.
  • Serves as a field educator, providing feedback and suggestions to implement best practices and standardize procedures.
  • Becomes adept at utilizing computer and EMR systems to increase productivity and efficiency.
  • Serves as an on-site clinical resource to field staff with complicated patient cases, making time for time-sensitive consultation needs.
  • Education Program Development & Training Assists in creating ongoing educational opportunities for field clinicians on topics such as EMR training, documentation, Pharmacy Benefit Manager training and assistance, policies, procedures, competency validation, mandatory education, and other topics as assigned.
  • Holds skills labs at least twice a year for clinical staff and as needed.
  • Develops, updates, and effectively presents education programs to a variety of audiences, including external referral sources, using adult learning principles.*
  • Oversees the annual education curriculum for clinicians in Relias and designs the annual training plan for each clinical discipline.*
  • Ensures clinicians on assigned teams successfully complete annual competencies.
  • Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of New Employee Orientation.*
    Educates all new employees on proper use of the timekeeping and mileage system and provides refreshers to current staff regularly.*
  • Quality, Compliance & Evidence-Based Practice Researches best practices and promotes excellence in evidence-based practice and quality performance, integrating new knowledge into educational programs.
  • Stays updated on state, federal, and regulatory standards, including those established by the accrediting body, as applied to hospice organizations.
  • Works with QAPI and Clinical Directors to ensure all education, training, and materials provided to staff comply with Federal, State, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts regular documentation reviews for new and current nurses to identify areas for improvement.*
  • Participates in and leads performance improvement projects.
  • Collaboration & Committee Work Meets monthly with Clinical Team Managers for input on clinical nursing education concerns.*
  • Coordinates with nursing departments of local schools to provide student placements and support school collaborations.*
  • Assists with the development of new and specialized clinical programs, including standardized precepting programs for nursing orientees and other nurses as needed.*
  • Professional Development & Conduct Continually assesses personal skills and knowledge base and actively seeks additional training through available resources.
  • Receives, critically evaluates, and discusses feedback in a professional manner.
  • Keeps abreast of current issues pertinent to the profession.
