Medical Services 

Hospice Physician/ APPLY

Position Summary:

The Hospice Physician is responsible for helping to establish, review, coordinate and manage the medical care provided to the patients on assigned interdisciplinary teams. They will also be responsible for initial certifications and recertifications with documentation of physician narratives.

The Hospice Physician will be available for consultation for the Hospice at Home and Casey House interdisciplinary teams during core business hours as well as assigned call shifts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland.
  • Board certification in related specialty, certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience as a practicing physician.
  • Knowledgeable about the psychosocial and medical aspects of hospice care.
  • Supports and identifies with Montgomery Hospice’s philosophy and its interdisciplinary approach to patient care planning and delivery.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and ability to exercise good judgement in emergency situations and ability to maintain effectiveness in a stressful environment

Nursing Services

Hospice Aide, CNA/ APPLY

Position Summary:

Works in accordance with the patient’s Plan of Care and supervised by the Registered Nurse, provides personal care for patients, and assists with their activities of daily living.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows the hospice aide plan of care developed for each patient, under the supervision of the Hospice Nurse.
  • Observes and reports any changes in patient’s condition immediately to Hospice Nurse.
  • Completes documentation for each visit as directed.
  • Continually assesses own skill and knowledgebase and actively seeks additional training through available resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current certification from the State of Maryland as Nursing Assistant (AIDE) required; certification as Hospice and Palliative Nursing Assistant preferred.
  • At least 2 years of practical experience in a hospital, nursing home or home care program.  Home care or hospice experience preferred.  Must have been providing similar services within the past two years.
  • Communication skills: ability to read, write, and verbally report clinical information to patients, caregivers, and hospice staff. Requires ability to assimilate easily into emotionally charged environment.  Demonstrates gentleness and empathy toward patients.  Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in required skills.
  • Will need to lift, position and transfer patients safely.  Manual dexterity and mobility needed, particularly in emergency situations.  Must be able to follow written and verbal directions. Job can be emotionally stressful.

Position Summary:

  • Develops an effective working relationship with representatives from other agencies who provide services for assigned patients.
  • Identifies and recommends medical equipment and supplies that will assist in maintaining patient’s comfort and caregivers’ ability to provide care.
  • Identifies the need for additional services, including nutritional assessment, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy and initiates appropriate referrals.
  • Assesses need for and educates caregivers on safety and emergency preparedness, including safe use of medical equipment.

Position Summary:

Bereavement Associate/ APPLY

Position Summary:

Provides administrative support for bereavement services including preparing and sending letters and cards to bereaved families.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides administrative support for bereavement services including work processing, filing, and copying.
  • Maintains client databases, including adding new clients.
  • Coordinates and supervises administrative volunteers for Bereavement Department.
  • Keeps professional persons and organizations up to date.
  • Sends notices of bereavement workshops, groups and events to individuals and organizations in professional database.
  • Keeps Bereavement Counselors informed of patient deaths on a weekly basis.
  • Responsible for monthly mailings to families and coordinates help from volunteers.
  • Maintains bereavement files for living and deceased patients and their families.

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent with some business courses. College level course work preferred.

Position Summary:

Responsible for answering, screening and transferring all calls. Functions of this position include greeting and attending to visitors; sorting and distributing mail; handling/receiving; sending packages/deliveries; maintaining reception area; and processing administrative assignments as required. Timeliness and regular attendance are critical for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Logs into automatic call distribution system on arrival and maintains available status.
  • Sends outlook text messages to appropriate clinical teams when required, enters calendar entry reminder, and changes entry when resolved.
  • Maintains awareness of queue light and retrieves call quickly from the queue.
  • Assist in coordinating services with the answering services by transferring and retrieving phone lines daily.
  • Provides clerical support for the agency by completing various administrative projects as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Some college or business school preferred.
  • Two to five years of clerical experience, preferably with Microsoft Office experience and experience answering multi-line phone.
  • Typing 50 wpm.
  • Excellent communication/verbal skills.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly on the telephone.

Montgomery Hospice and Prince George’s Hospice offers generous benefits and ongoing support and development for the people who give so much of themselves to serve our community.

Our benefits include:

Comprehensive medical coverage for individuals and dependents is available for staff scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week. You may select from HMOs, Preferred Provider Organizations or Point of Service plans. Coverage begins the first day of the month following your date of hire.

Coverage is available for you and your dependents. Coverage includes preventive, basic and major services.

Employees who are scheduled for 30 hours or more are automatically covered by short-term and long-term disability coverage. The organization will pay the full premium for this valuable benefit.

Vision benefits are available to you and your family for employees regularly scheduled for 20 hours or more per week.

Life insurance is available for employees who are scheduled for 20 hours or more per week. You may cover yourself and your spouse from $10,000 to $300,000 depending on medical eligibility.

Employees scheduled to work 16 hours or more are eligible for prorated paid leave.

  • Employees accrue paid vacation, at the rate of 13 days for the first year, increasing to 20 days in the fifth year.
  • Employees accrue 10 days per year of sick leave to be used for yourself and family illnesses.
  • We offer 7 paid holidays each year and 4 personal days.
  • We offer up to 5 days of bereavement leave.
Confidential counseling and referral service is available to all employees, their spouses and dependents. Services are provided through LifeWork Strategies, a division of Adventist Healthcare and include 24/7 access to a toll-free help line, assessment by professional counselors, referrals to EAP counselors and community based resources. It also includes resource and referral services for child care, senior care, legal and financial consultation.
The organization has a policy for donating or requesting leave for employees who exhausted their own leave because of a health crisis of their own or a family member.
All employees are eligible to participate in a voluntary Tax Sheltered Annuity [403(b)] through Vanguard as a means of saving for retirement.
Eligible employees have access to a Health Care Reimbursement Account and/or a Dependent Care Reimbursement Account. This allows you to set aside funds, on a pre-tax basis, for reimbursement for health care or dependent care expenses.
Arrangements can be made to have your payroll check automatically deposited in your bank.
All employees are eligible to join the NIH credit union.
Staff will be reimbursed for hospice-related travel at the current IRS rate.
The agency encourages nurses to apply for certification as a hospice and palliative nurse (CHPN) and nursing assistants as hospice and palliative care nursing assistants (CHPNA) through the certification process of the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses. Social workers are also eligible for a national Hospice and Palliative Certification. The organization will pay for the exam and award a 5% pay increase for certification.

Montgomery Hospice and Prince George’s Hospice recognizes the importance of continuing staff development, and supports a program of education and in-service training for hospice staff. This includes tuition for conferences and workshops and paid education days.
