Prince George’s Hospice Current Job Openings

Social Worker / APPLY

Position Summary:

Provides full range of social services to patients and families, including counseling in issues related to death and dying, coping, crisis intervention and community and economic resources. Serves as a primary member of an interdisciplinary team, assisting other disciplines on the team in understanding the significant social and emotional factors related to the patient’s and family’s comfort. Explains hospice services and benefit to referred patients and families; obtains consents for hospice care. Works in collaboration with the other primary team members to coordinate care for the patient and family. Provides periodic on-call support as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates the social, emotional and environmental factors to determine the capacity of the patient and caregivers to cope with terminal illness and death.
  • Participates in the completion of a psychosocial assessment delineating specific problems, goals, and interventions.
  • Coordinates with interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement a plan of care that includes potential problems and areas in social work interventions.
  • Provides initial assessment of hospice patients.
  • Presents hospice services to potential hospice patients and to other healthcare professionals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters of Social Work from an accredited graduate program.
  • Licensed Social Worker with the state of Maryland. LCSW-C preferred.
  • Minimum of two years post-graduate clinical experience.
  • Ability to work with patients and families dealing with life-threatening illness required.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Previous hospice experience preferred.

Nursing Services

Hospice RN/ APPLY

Position Summary:

Functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team, responsible for providing primary nursing care to assigned patients. Responsible for coordinating the interdisciplinary team to ensure adequate assessment, planning, and implementation of the patient and family’s plan of care consistent with standards of practice.

  • Provides primary nursing services for assigned patients in the community.

Pediatric Hospice Nurse / APPLY

Position Summary:

Functioning as a member of an interdisciplinary team, provides case management and primary nursing care to assigned pediatric and adult patients, addressing physical, psychosocial and spiritual aspects of care specific to the age of the patient. Responsible for formulating and implementing nursing plan of care consistent with standards of practice. Responsible for coordination of services for pediatric patients including mentoring of new nurses, primary on-call as needed for pediatric patients and 24-hour backup on-call for pediatric resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides case management for hospice patients.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing plans of care for assigned caseload on a weekly basis.
  • Provides primary nursing services for assigned patients.
  • Actively participates in and supports the interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Serves as contact person of the day, alternating with other team members.
  • Completes all documentation within agency guidelines and in accordance with agency standards.
  • Maintains contact with primary physicians in accordance with agency policies and in keeping with physician’s request.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program. B.S.N preferred.
  • Current State of Maryland Nursing License. CHPN required.
  • Five years previous hospice experience, including at least three years of pediatric hospice case management.
  • Requires strong critical thinking skills and EMR experience.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to communicate effectively with patients and families under stress.

Casey House 

Hospice Nurse, Casey House / APPLY

Position Summary:

Responsible for providing skilled nursing care to the terminally ill patients at Casey House. Responsibilities include assessing the needs of the patient and providing and documenting patient care in a caring and compassionate manner. To provide evidenced based nursing care to provide symptom management and emotional support in an inpatient setting. Exhibits expert end-of-life care and provides supervision to Hospice Aides. Is a member of an interdisciplinary team focusing on optimum end-of-life care.

  • Provides nursing care for hospice patients admitted to Casey House.
  •  Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing plans of care for assigned patients.
  • Fulfills the role of Charge Nurse, as assigned.
  • Completes all documentation within agency guidelines and in accordance with agency standards.
  • Meets requirements for educational growth and development.
  • Maintains high standards as established for all employees of Montgomery Hospice.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program. B.S.N preferred.

  • One year of recent clinical nursing experience in medical-surgical, oncology or critical care environment.  Previous hospice experience preferred.

Counseling Services 

Bereavement Counselor / APPLY

Position Summary:

Provides a range of grief counseling services to hospice family members and community, including phone and online counseling support (and in-person when it becomes safe and appropriate).  Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide team support, assisting with grief-related transitions after the patient’s death.  Provides professional co-facilitation of grief groups and workshops throughout the year (including some evenings).  Works closely with a team of counseling colleagues to coordinate care; provides accurate and appropriate documentation for all counseling and support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assesses the impact of loss in working with clients and works toward meaningful integration and healthy coping over time.
  • Manages a counseling caseload that includes scheduling assignments and providing complete documentation of specific issues and interventions.
  • Collaborates with grief counseling colleagues to provide safe, effective support groups and workshops through the year.
  • Provides a supportive time in interdisciplinary meetings for colleagues.
  • Works closely with grief counseling colleagues around coordination of care and ongoing education.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or a counseling-related field
  • Previous hospice and/or grief counseling experience (including groups) preferred
  • Excellent listening and interpersonal skills in phone and video counseling
  • A basic understanding of loss and grief with some personal integration
  • Ability to work from home and have some facility with online communication platforms (Zoom, etc.)

Administrative 

Donor Relations Assistant / APPLY

Position Summary:

Provides administrative support both remotely and in the office for the donation process including copying gift logs, entering gifts into computer database, preparation of acknowledgment letters and family notification cards, and creation of computer-generated reports. Assists with production of appeals and other specialized mailings. Provides administrative support to the Vice President of Philanthropy and performs other administrative duties to support the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides administrative support for the donation and gift acknowledgement process.
  • Assists in the production of appeals and other specialized mailings.
  • Provides administrative support to the Vice President of Philanthropy.
  • Responds to department inquiries and requests from donors, volunteers, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, associate degree or higher preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience as data entry specialist and/or executive assistant; prior experience working with donors, boards, volunteers and/or the community preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and data programs; proficiency in Blackbaud’s Raiser Edge highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, problem solving, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and outstanding proofreading and editing skills.

Montgomery Hospice and Prince George’s Hospice offers generous benefits and ongoing support and development for the people who give so much of themselves to serve our community.

Our benefits include:

Comprehensive medical coverage for individuals and dependents is available for staff scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week. You may select from HMOs, Preferred Provider Organizations or Point of Service plans. Coverage begins the first day of the month following your date of hire.

Coverage is available for you and your dependents. Coverage includes preventive, basic and major services.

Employees who are scheduled for 30 hours or more are automatically covered by short-term and long-term disability coverage. The organization will pay the full premium for this valuable benefit.

Vision benefits are available to you and your family for employees regularly scheduled for 20 hours or more per week.

Life insurance is available for employees who are scheduled for 20 hours or more per week. You may cover yourself and your spouse from $10,000 to $300,000 depending on medical eligibility.

Employees scheduled to work 16 hours or more are eligible for prorated paid leave.

  • Employees accrue paid vacation, at the rate of 13 days for the first year, increasing to 20 days in the fifth year.
  • Employees accrue 10 days per year of sick leave to be used for yourself and family illnesses.
  • We offer 7 paid holidays each year and 4 personal days.
  • We offer up to 5 days of bereavement leave.
Confidential counseling and referral service is available to all employees, their spouses and dependents. Services are provided through LifeWork Strategies, a division of Adventist Healthcare and include 24/7 access to a toll-free help line, assessment by professional counselors, referrals to EAP counselors and community based resources. It also includes resource and referral services for child care, senior care, legal and financial consultation.
The organization has a policy for donating or requesting leave for employees who exhausted their own leave because of a health crisis of their own or a family member.
All employees are eligible to participate in a voluntary Tax Sheltered Annuity [403(b)] through Vanguard as a means of saving for retirement.
Eligible employees have access to a Health Care Reimbursement Account and/or a Dependent Care Reimbursement Account. This allows you to set aside funds, on a pre-tax basis, for reimbursement for health care or dependent care expenses.

Staff will be reimbursed for hospice-related travel at the current IRS rate.
The agency encourages nurses to apply for certification as a hospice and palliative nurse (CHPN) and nursing assistants as hospice and palliative care nursing assistants (CHPNA) through the certification process of the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses. Social workers are also eligible for a national Hospice and Palliative Certification. The organization will pay for the exam and award a 5% pay increase for certification.

Montgomery Hospice and Prince George’s Hospice recognizes the importance of continuing staff development, and supports a program of education and in-service training for hospice staff. This includes tuition for conferences and workshops and paid education days.
