Press Release: CEO Ann Mitchell Announces Retirement

May 24, 2023

Longest Serving Montgomery Hospice, Inc. CEO Announces Retirement

Rockville, MD—Ann Mitchell, MPH, president and CEO of Montgomery Hospice, Inc., has announced her retirement. June marks her 25th anniversary with the organization.

In her announcement to the Board, Ms. Mitchell shared, “It has been my privilege to have been the administrator for Montgomery Hospice, Inc., for the past 25 years. While there is no ideal time to leave, I believe this is the right time for the organization, as well as for me and my family.”

The Board of Directors has asked Ms. Mitchell to remain in the role until a successor is hired. “I am honored and happy to do so,” says Mitchell. “It is important to me that I help wherever I can to make this a thoughtful and deliberative process.”

Mitchell has been in hospice management since 1981 when a year later, she lobbied for passage of the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Prior to coming to Montgomery Hospice in 1998, she worked for non-profit hospices in Massachusetts and South Carolina. In the late 1980s she was instrumental in the development of an AIDS inpatient hospice in Boston. In addition, she was the principal investigator of a 1994 study researching the economics of hospice care.

“Ann’s expertise and leadership in the hospice and palliative care industry was pivotal to the growth and success of Montgomery Hospice, Inc.,” commented Diane Kuwamura, Chair of the Board of Directors. She continued, “in her more than two decades, she oversaw the building of Casey House, our 14-bed inpatient hospice, spearheaded the creation of Palliative Medicine Consultants of Greater Washington, helped establish Montgomery Kids, a pediatric hospice service, and was instrumental in the organization’s expansion into Prince George’s County.”

Ms. Mitchell served on several Boards, including the Hospice and Palliative Network of Maryland, the Hospice Alliance, and the Retirement Services Board of Directors of Maplewood Park Place, a continuing care retirement community located in Bethesda, Maryland. She is also a member of the Leadership Montgomery Class of 2015 and a Trustee Emeritus of Smith College. In recognition of her significant contribution to the industry and the community, in 2019, Sen. Chris Van Hollen recognized Ann with a Citation in the Congressional Record of the 116th Congress.

“The Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers are grateful to Ann for her service and all that she’s done to bring the organization to the forefront of the hospice and palliative care movement,” Kuwamura stated. “We are especially thankful that she’s agreed to remain to help with a smooth transition and until a successor is hired.”

Ann leaves big shoes to fill, however, she will be leaving the organization with a bright future and well-positioned to navigate the challenges in healthcare.
